The area around Matrei is bordered by the idyllic backdrop of the two largest mountains in Austria and the natural landscape of the Hohe Tauern National Park. The Großglockner (3,798 m) and Großvenediger (3.674 m) sit enthroned over the region - mountain scenery which is difficult to surpass! In total, 16 lifts carry you comfortably up to an altitude of 2,621 m, from where you can see a breathtaking view of the surrounding mountains. Matrei is the main resort in the region of South Hohe Tauern and is considered a true hidden gem. Typical for Matrei is its distinct "Gemütlichkeit" and its peaceful village feeling. The locals here maintain the "old tradition", but this does not mean their stuck in the past. The resort is an ideal base for various tours through the wintery ski areas of the Virgen Valley. Everything is possible here, whether skiing, snowboarding, ice-skating, tobogganing or winter hiking.
